There are times when xrays do not tell the whole story. In some cases, we may need to see the inside of organs, get "real time" images of movement in your pet (heart, intestines etc.), or look at something we can feel or even see the shape of on an xray but not identify.
Ultrasound uses sound waves to actually look into and through tissue, allowing us to identify gas, liquid and solid tissue. We can visualize the inside of apparently solid masses and tell if they contain only tissue, have liquid or gas inside, or even contain a foreign object. We also use ultrasound to diagnose pregnancy, generally allowing an accurate assessment of stage of pregnancy and whether the puppies or kittens are healthy. Echocardiography, or ultrasound of the heart, can diagnose certain heart abnormalities and help assess the degree of heart disease.
We can also use the ultrasound to see things that we want to sample (such as the bladder, cysts, masses etc.)
